Student success in the Mathematical Contest in Modelling 2010

Two teams of Cambridge mathematics undergraduates (Tom Wilson, Li Wu & Guolong Li, and David Foster, George Hickmet & Quain Shen) have both earned a "Meritorious" ranking, placing them in the top 20% of over 2,200 entries, in this year's Mathematical Contest in Modelling (MCM) competition. Although it was the first year of Cambridge involvement in the competition, the performance was comparable to other leading universities such as Harvard, Princeton and MIT.

The competition ran from 18th February 2010 to 22nd February 2010 and during these four days the Cambridge teams researched, modelled and submitted a solution to a problem in criminology which required them to make use of data on location and times of past crime scenes to advise a police force on likely locations on future crimes.
